What DownSub does

DownSub is built around one job done well: turning a public video’s existing captions into a file you can actually use. No account system, no dashboard to learn, no upsells. A source only makes it onto the supported sites list after it has been tested against real public URLs and confirmed to return genuine subtitle cues.

What DownSub will not do

DownSub is not designed to bypass private videos, paywalls, DRM, login walls, or regional restrictions. If a video’s captions aren’t publicly exposed, DownSub tells you why extraction failed instead of pretending to work around it.

Why we built it this way

Most subtitle tools bury a simple task under sign-up walls, ads, or bundled software. This About DownSub page exists to say plainly what the product is: a browser-based extractor for people who need captions outside the video player — creators preparing an edit, students reviewing a lecture, researchers searching an interview, and accessibility reviewers checking transcript quality.
